Tennyson Gastroenterology Site
SA Group of Specialists was established in 2000 and aims to provide a comprehensive digestive health service. It comprises of specialists with expertise in gastroenterology, hepatology, internal medicine as well as general and digestive surgery. Dieticians and psychologists complete the service. SGIS has evolved to be the largest group gastroenterology practices in South Australia, and one of the largest in Australia.
Tennyson Gastroenterology is the fourth site of SGIS (the others are at Flinders Private Hospital, Wakefield Clinic and Western Hospital) and was established in 2009. In addition to gastroenterology, colorectal surgeons, dieticians and psychologists consult at Tennyson, sharing notes and information to provide a comprehensive digestive health service.
A/Prof Bampton works at both the Flinders Private and Tennyson sites, but his private practice is based predominantly at the Tennyson site.
Associate Professor Peter Bampton
A/Prof Bampton is the Head of Luminal Gastroenterology at Flinders Medical Centre and Associate Professor of Gastroenterology at Flinders University of South Australia.
A/Prof Bampton graduated in medicine from the University of Adelaide in 1988, and completed specialist training in Gastroenterology in 1996. He was also awarded a Doctorate of Medicine from the University of New South Wales for his thesis work on colonic physiology in 2002.
He has a sub-speciality interest in inflammatory bowel disease and set up the Southern Adelaide IBD Service. He was a founding member of the national executive of IBD Australia. He has an interest in colorectal and oesophageal cancer prevention, developing the SCOOP and BOSS recall programs at FMC, RGH and SGIS which have achieved national recognition as quality surveillance programs. He has been an elected member of council of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (the national body of Gastroenterology in Australia) as well as chair of its education arm, the Digestive Health Foundation. He has participated in a number of state and national committees advising on colorectal cancer screening and prevention and given expert opinion to the Medical Board of Victoria, Melbourne Health and the RACP Specialist Advisory Committee for Gastroenterology. He has been a scientific grant reviewer for the NHMRC (Australia), Canterbury Health (NZ) and the Ministry of Health of Singapore.
A/Prof Bampton has given over 120 presentations at scientific meetings, and has more than 30 publications and has contributed to both the Australian Medicines and Therapeutic Guidelines Handbooks. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, and has been recognised as presenting papers of distinction at their annual scientific meeting.
Privacy Information
A patient's personal information is handled in accordance with this practice’s privacy policy and consistent with the privacy legislation.Information about a patient’s medical and family health history is needed to provide accurate medical diagnoses and appropriate treatment.
Medical care requires full knowledge of patient health information by all members of a medical team. To ensure quality and continuity of patient care, a patient's health information has to be shared with other health care providers from time to time. Some information about patients is also provided to Medicare, and private health funds if relevant, for billing and medical rebate purposes.
There are also circumstances where a medical practitioner is legally bound to disclose personal information. An example of this is the mandatory reporting of communicable diseases. It is necessary for us to keep patient's information after their last attendance at this practice for as long as is required by law or is prudent having regard to administrative requirements.
A patient has a right to access their information. While not required to give reasons for their request, a patient may be asked to give reasons for their request. Please do not hesitate to discuss any concerns, questions or complaints about any issues related to the privacy of your personal information with your doctor.

Financial Disclosures
A/Prof Bampton has been/or is a member of Medical Advisory Boards for Ferring Pharmaceuticals, Abbott Australasia and Pharmatel Fresenius Kabi. He has no shares in pharmaceutical or health industry companies. He does have a 2.5% ownership of the business entity that manages the Tennyson Day Procedure Centre.
He has accepted speaker honorariums and/or travel support from Abbott, Astra-Zeneca, Pfizer, Altana, Olympus and Orphan Australia. He has received non-directed funding for his research and clinical programs from Abbott, AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Altana, Ferring, Enterix, Flinders Private Hospital, Orphan Australia and Scherring Plough.
He has received competitive research grant funding from the SA Department of Health (Strategic Health Research Program and the Quality Development Fund), the FMC Foundation, Flinders University of SA and the Cancer Councils of SA and WA.

Full payment on the day is encouraged.
Note – if you have a colonoscopy arranged, standard preparation kits are included in the consultation fee, but newer more expensive kits may attract a surcharge of up to $30. This will be explained to you at the time of booking the colonoscopy.
Fee Schedule (Procedures)
Endoscopy, colonoscopy, liver biopsy, infliximab, iron infusions and blood transfusions are performed as an inpatient stay and so are charged differently to consultation fees.
If you have health insurance then you can elect to have your procedures performed at Flinders Private Hospital or Tennyson Day Surgery. A/Prof Bampton participates in the “gap cover” schemes of the private health funds. Therefore there is no gap charge, the only extra costs will be if you have an excess on your health fund. Endoscopy and colonoscopy are performed at both Flinders Private and Tennyson Day Surgery, liver biopsies only at Flinders Private. Infliximab, iron and blood transfusions are performed at the Tennyson Medical Infusion Centre.
If you are uninsured, you can chose to have your procedure at Flinders Medical Centre, where A/Prof Bampton or colleague will supervise you procedure by the Gastroenterology Registrar, alternatively you can “self fund” in the private sector. Depending upon procedure and location this will cost between $300 - $600. Please ask the practice staff for further details.
Inpatient (Overnight) Care
If you require a hospital admission, and are privately insured then A/Prof Bampton will admit you to Flinders Private Hospital. At Flinders Private you will be seen daily by the SGIS-FPH Gastroenterology Registrar, and every day to second daily by A/Prof Bampton.
A/Prof Bampton participates in the “gap cover” schemes of the private health funds. Therefore there is no gap charge, the only extra costs will be if you have an excess on your health fund.
If you are not insured then you will be admitted to Flinders Medical Centre. The FMC Luminal Gastroenterology Registrar will manage your case on a daily basis, with the Consultant Gastroenterologist on ward service reviewing your progress at least 3 times a week. Please note that A/Prof Bampton may not specifically see you unless he is on ward service, but will see you in his rooms upon discharge.

If the call is not answered/returned promptly and you feel unwell please attend your local emergency department. If you have private health insurance, Ashford Hospital emergency department is open from 0800 am to 1000pm, and you can be transferred from there to a bed at Flinders Private if it is decided to admit you to hospital. If you are not insured, then please attend Flinders Medical Centre emergency department for urgent care.
